Junior Cycle is a three-year programme for students in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Year.
At Elphin Community College, Junior Cycle provides students with a broad and balanced education, helping them to develop knowledge, skills, confidence and independence as learners.

📝 Assessment and Classroom-Based Assessments
Assessment in Junior Cycle includes ongoing classroom learning, Classroom-Based Assessments and final State Examinations.
Classroom-Based Assessments
- Completed during 2nd and/or 3rd Year in many subjects.
- Allow students to demonstrate learning in different ways.
- May include oral presentations, projects, investigations, practical work or written tasks.
- Reported as part of the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement.
Final State Examinations
- Take place at the end of 3rd Year.
- Set and marked by the State Examinations Commission.
- Form part of the overall Junior Cycle reporting process.
- Students should check examination timetables carefully.

Wellbeing is an important part of Junior Cycle and supports students’ personal, social and emotional development.

🎓 Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement
At the end of Junior Cycle, students receive a Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement, known as the JCPA.
The JCPA may include:
- State Examination results
- Classroom-Based Assessment descriptors
- Wellbeing learning
- Other areas of learning and achievement
🤝 Supporting Students During Junior Cycle
Students are supported throughout Junior Cycle by subject teachers, Year Heads, school leadership, guidance, learning support and the wider student support team.

- Communication with parents/guardians
- Encouragement to take part in school life
