Elphin Debating Team Reach CONCERN last 16
Well done to our Concern Debating team, who had a unanimous victory over Athlone Community College in the final 32 teams. Having progressed from their group, the Elphin team consisting of Finbar McDermott, Mark Brennan, Gerard McDermottroe and Hazel Conroy, were given the tough task of debating against the defending All Ireland Champions from Athlone. In fact, Athlone Community College have won the title on three of the last four occasions. The topic up for debate was “One year after the earthquake the developed world has been a good friend to Haiti”. Elphin were in Opposition. This being Elphin’s fifth debate, the team has begun to show real composure on front of the podium and they opposed the motion with great effect. Having now progressed to the last 16 teams in Ireland and being the sole representatives of Connacht remaining in the tournament, the team can be very proud of their achievements to date. However with a prize of a trip to Africa on the cards, the teams appetite is only starting to grow. A special mention to team tutor, Eddie Flanaghan also has to be made and the school and team are greatly appreciative of his efforts.
