Academic Curriculum

The curriculum is divided between two broad areas, Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle.

The subjects are listed below and ALL SUBJECTS ARE OPEN TO BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS.

Elphin Community College offers a wide range of Junior and Senior cycle subjects. Students are offered the opportunity to study all examination subjects at Higher or Ordinary level for both Junior Certificate & Leaving Certificate.

Junior Certificate

  • Subjects which are offered at junior level include the following:

English; Mathematics; Irish; Science; History; Geography; Civic, Social & Political Education; French; Home Economics; Business; Materials Technology Wood; Materials Technology Metal; Technical Graphics; Art, Craft & Design; Music; Computers & Information Technology; Social, Personal & Health Education; Religion; Career Guidance.

Transition Year

A Fourth Year Transition Programme is also available in Elphin Community College covering approximately twelve different subject areas.

Unlike many other schools, Elphin Community College places significant emphasis on key preparation for the Senior Cycle. Critical subject areas are covered to a very high standard especially Mathematics, English and Irish. It is our experience that students can gain at least one grade at Leaving Certificate level having completed a successful Fourth Year programme.

In addition Elphin Community College has developed an extensive programme of projects & activities aimed at further developing students with particular emphasis on personal development in the areas of business, drama, computer technology, music & sport. Other aspects include a four week period of work experience for each student where students may explore career paths of choice.

Leaving Certificate

Subjects which are offered at senior level include the following:

English; Mathematics; Irish; French; Business; History; Geography; Biology; Physics & Chemistry; Technical Drawing; Engineering; Art & Art History; Business; Construction Studies; Home Economics; Enterprise Studies (LCVP).

The Leaving Certificate programme is specially tailored to facilitate the specific requirements for students in any given year. Our qualified school Guidance Counsellor is available to all students to assist them with their personal, educational and vocational decisions. Career Guidance is delivered though both timetabled classes and individual sessions.

Elphin Community College also offers students the opportunity to partake in supervised study sessions from 4:15pm to 6.15pm each evening. To further enhance academic achievements we also provide a study skills training programme for students, teachers and parents.
